"Dr. Shobha
Tandon, first of all, she is a very caring and
sensitive doctor. I felt that she is careful in
all her handling, therefore, very professional.
She made sure that I had all the proper tests
and even some extra so that she knew exactly what
she needed to be comfortable. Therefore, I was
comfortable. When it came time for surgery, all
my friends were asking me if I was nervous, but
since the doctor had explained to me in full detail
what the procedure was, I felt that I was not
nervous at all.
My first apprehension was that it would be painful,
but no part of the procedure was in the least
painful. What was amazing was the length of time
was so short. It took only 10 or 15 minutes in
all.
Then when I came home, there was no need for any
of the painkillers the counselor had said I might
need. All I did was to go to sleep for 2 to 3
hours and I was fine. Then when I woke up the
next morning, I was fresh. The doctor had told
me that there was 85% chance of me needing reading
glasses, but I was very lucky and found that I
could even read. One of my eyes is actually 20/10.
This is truly a gift for me. And, I am very thankful
that I found a very caring and sensitive doctor."
-Samar Munir
"Dr. Tandon
was wonderful! I've worn glasses since 3rd grade
and was terrified but excited. She explained everything
in detail and even let me look over her shoulder.
It's been 2 years since my PRK surgery and I'm
ecstatic to say I'm still seeing 20/20."
-Linda K. Shonk
"I had PRK
done on both eyes about 3 months ago and am absolutely
loving the results. My eyesight was your basic
20/400, can't see the big letter on the eye chart,
bad vision prior to the PRK. I no longer use any
corrective lenses or glasses, and it is a great
freedom from the daily regimen required with contact
lenses. I am 40 had worn contact lenses since
I was 13, glasses since I was 10.
I have lived in California Bay area for 17 years
and my regular ophthalmologist as recent as a
couple of years ago would not recommend any corrective
procedures such as PRK when I asked him about
it. I switched to Dr. Tandon initially to cover
my eye exams under my Lifeguard insurance policy
and for her location closer to my home. When I
first went to her office, I noticed the VISX posters
advertising laser correction, and was interested
in consulting with her about the process.
Her professional and academic credentials are
impressive and her patient rapport added to the
credentials. She talked knowledgeably and confidently
about the process and her experience. I chose
PRK over LASIK, the more current method, because
of her recommendation. Because the LASIK procedure
entails the cutting of a flap in the corneal surface
which is then closed back down after the laser
correction is done, the chance for infection is
higher with this method. With PRK, the corneal
surface is removed and grows back within a couple
of days after the procedure is done. The downside
of PRK is that because the surface is removed,
recovery is more painful than with LASIK. I knew
of a colleague at work who had LASIK done around
the same time I had PRK, and he was back at work
the next morning after a late afternoon procedure
on both eyes. PRK required two days off work with
the first half day after the procedure being fairly
painful.
I had one eye corrected at one time and the other
two and a half weeks later. I was exploring the
option of not getting full correction done on
one of my eyes, anticipating the need of eventually
for some nearsightedness for reading. Correcting
one eye at a time allowed me to preview how I
would adjust to my monovision-- one eye's vision
being better than the other. It actually worked
out very well, even with my significant nearsightedness
prior to correction. After getting my second eye
corrected to 20/30, I have no adverse symptoms
to the difference in the vision between my eyes.
As I stated at the beginning, I love the results
and am enjoying experiencing normal vision without
corrective lenses." -Claudia

"Procedure
itself…My experience was that the procedure
was extremely quick, and completely painless.
Two steps caught me a bit ?…the first being
the smell of smoke from the laser itself (not
frightening as I know the cause, but a bit unsettling).
The second was the scraping the cornea. Dr. Tandon
may have shared this step with me but I had forgotten.
Once again, I felt nothing what so ever but was
caught off-guard by it.
The biggest plus to having Dr. Tandon do you procedure
was her use of the extra-thin contact lens. While
I left the Laser Center mobile, in great spirits,
and looking 'just fine,' the direct patients of
the Laser Center had patches over their eye, and
dark glasses. I had no discomfort and the contact
lens was so comfortable, I never realized I had
it on.
Next day…My strongest sensation here was
not of any pain but of irritation. My one eye,
'wept' all day. I ended up just relaxing that
day, rather than working-due to my need to wipe
my eye, as if it were "crying." Other
than that, it was great. My eye had already adjusted
to 20-50 and I could tell the difference in my
vision.
Second day… My recommendation regards the
contact lens. When Dr. Tandon takes it off, if
your eye hasn't 100% healed over, have her put
a replacement lens in. I felt fine when I left
and went without a lens, when the numbing drops
wore off 20 minutes after my visit, it felt an
ice pick in my eye. The pain was so localized
that I realized that the pain came specifically
from that small portion of unhealed tissue. The
way I made it better was to take a pain pill,
put tissue over the eye and with a patch, immobilize
the lid from blinking. That took care of the irritation,
within 5 hours the tissue was healed over, and
I could remove the patch.
Overall, it took about one month for my brain
vision to "stabilize." My brain kept
noticing the variance of the new vision perspective
vs, the old perspective of vision with my glasses.
I did find at night, in heavy on-coming traffic,
it helps to wear my glasses with only the corrective
left lens in place. In the right lens I have clear
glass. Three months later, I have used these "night
time glasses" twice, when my eyes were particularly
tired, and my driving had me in heavy traffic
and rainy weather. For the most part, I feel totally
confident, and comfortable driving anytime with
the laser correction in my right eye only. My
'brain perspective' is completely in tune with
my new vision ability, and I believe I see better
overall now then I did with my glasses before
PRK." -Dianne
